PGDM or MBA which is better?

Individuals, students who want to have a management education it is common to have the dilemma between MBA and PGDM. Which one of the two is better in terms of curriculum, recognition, job prospects and all that one would expect from a management degree. While both MBA and PGDM are management degrees intrinsically, there is thin line that separates the two since both are professional, career-oriented courses.

Management education, having a MBA is a fad in current times that has led to the mushrooming of management institutes. Many times students undertake management education out of peer pressure, following what others are doing not knowing if it really suits them. Higher education, which takes so much effort in terms of time, money need to be well understood before pursued. A fundamental understanding of the program, what it offers how it differs from other similar courses need to be well understood can be instrumental to select a program that would be compatible to an individual’s career goals.

MBA and PGDM are two most closely related programs for management education. While on most stances, the two are same but there is a thin line that distinguishes the two. An MBA is offered by colleges, institutions that are affiliated to some university or autonomous institute such as IIMs. A PGDM, on the other can be offered by any institute affiliated by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). PGDM from an institute is accepted as equivalent to MBA, mostly due to accreditation by Association of Indian Universities.

But the dilemma persists. Is PGDM at par with MBA? The question, dilemma that haunts students until the selection process is over and then no looking behind. In the corporate scenario, both PGDM and MBA are equal. Both the programs are equally recognized to have successful, lucrative career prospects. In the long run it is the individual’s capability, competency that matters which program was pursued becomes immaterial.

Undoubtedly, MBA is well recognized it is offered by 300 private institutions across the country, although only 30 odd provide excellent placement. A PGDM, which is well designed, prepares students for thorough, management centric knowledge of markets, trends that are seen in the global business front, understanding complex business issues for business decision making and more. A PGDM, which is well structured, aims to sharpen one’s interpersonal skills; analytical thinking and multi-tasking skills that are needed for quick decision making that can turn difficult situations in to favorable outcomes.

An ideal management program, which ever it may be MBA or PGDM offers classroom lectures hand-in-hand with real life experiential learning needed by future business leaders to face challenges in a real business scenario. A PGDM that is pursued from a recognized institute gives all the chance for an updated curriculum, good faculty, hands-on experience and excellent job prospects. So much is PGDM recognized, among the top management institutes in India only a select few offer MBA and the remaining all offer PGDM.

If PGDM in Kolkata is the best choice, the take is fully on you. The management needs in current corporate environment is continuously changing, the program that best suits for the industry, sustainable in the long run has to be judiciously selected. It’s totally up to you, your take what do you want to do in future where do you want to see yourself based on which choose options carefully! Students who pursue PGDM also believe that if it is pursued from one of the top ranked B-Schools, it can be one of the best options can be first choice before MBA. The take is yours?
